Job Description:  The Billing Specialist and Coder is responsible for all aspects of the coding for APN and physician visits, billing and accounts receivable (collections) process for Palliative Care billing. This position is also responsible to provide back-up for billing for hospice operations.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all aspects of the coding, billing and accounts receivable (collection) process for Palliative Care. Analyzes clinical documentation to accurately assign codes for physician and nurse practitioner visits. Ensures that all information needed for a claim is entered correctly into the patient management system. Processes and posts monthly billing, and completes follow-up billing for subscriber liability.
  • Responsible for providing back-up support for Hospice billing including but not limited to processing Notice of Election (NOE) for new Medicare admissions and that all information needed for a claim is entered correctly into the patient management system. Processes and posts monthly billing.
  • Completes all billing according to monthly deadlines established by the Director of Operations.
  • Regularly follows up on past due accounts receivable. Reviews and actively attempts to collect on a monthly basis. Furnishes everything required by insurance companies. Submits any uncollectible charges to the Director of Operations.
  • Prepares new annual files and moves prior year files to storage.
  • Meets standards set by Joint Commission and other external organizations, as well as standards set internally by administration and others that relate to this position.
  • Responsible for learning and utilizing technology made available by the agency to increase efficiency, communication and performance of duties.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes all mandatory training.
  • Holds in strictest confidence all patient information and discloses information and data only to persons authorized by Hospice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements Qualifications

  • Possesses coding education or a minimum of 1 year of experience with diagnosis and CPT coding in a medical records office; health information technology (HIT) degree with credential (RHIT, RHIA) or coding certificate preferred.
  • Additional education and/or previous experience in healthcare insurance billing are preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel and Outlook. Must have excellent data entry skills.
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possesses strong analytical skills.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to schedule work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Is committed to the philosophy, goals, and objectives of Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
